VAULTS OF HEAVEN: Visions of Byzantium
Bellarmine Hall Gallery

“Vaults of Heaven: Visions of Byzantium” features eight large-scale works by innovative, acclaimed Turkish photographer Ahmet Ertug showing the splendor of Byzantine sacred art, preserved in early Christian churches in both Constantinople (Istanbul), the capital of the Byzantine Empire, and the Cappadocia region of Turkey. The exhibition documents the interiors of four churches — the Karankik Kilise (Dark Church), the New Church of Tokali (Buckle Church), and the Meryem Ana Kilisesi (Church of the Mother of God) in Cappadocia, and the Church of Christ of Chora (Kariye Camii) in Istanbul—each more than 900 years old.

The photographs include images of the dramatic church interiors and close-up views of elaborate wall paintings and mosaics depicting scenes from the life of Christ and images of saints. Ertug’s descriptive, detailed photographs capture the evocative mystery and grandeur of these ancient structures, all designated UNESCO World Heritage sites.

September 7 – October 21
RICK SHAEFER: The Refugee Trilogy
Walsh Art Gallery at THE QUICK

This three-piece suite is comprised of Land Crossing , dealing with the migration across foreign lands; Water Crossing , addressing the perilous journeys of refugees on the open seas; and Border Crossing , spotlighting the conflicts and hostilities faced at borders. The trilogy employs the artistic lexicon of the Baroque (specifically incorporating heroic figurative elements of paintings by Peter Paul Rubens) to explore this contemporary crisis in a language both familiar and canonical. Such historical quotations underscore the tenacious persistence of this epic human tragedy throughout time.

November 3, 2016 – March 3, 2017
LEONARDO CREMONINI (1925-2010): Timeless Monumentality Paintings
from the Williams Louis-Dreyfus Foundation
Walsh Art Gallery at THE QUICK

Leonardo Cremonini was one of the preeminent Italian painters of the twentieth century. A “spirit of timeless monumentality” (the term formulated by legendary MoMA Director William Rubin) characterizes his haunting, poetic and enigmatic imagery — arid, light-filled, silent interiors, described with a geometric rigor and clarity, and populated by anemic, emotionally detached figures. Featuring some 35 works from the peerless holdings of the William-Louis Dreyfus Foundation, this major exhibition is the first monographic survey devoted to Cremonini in over two decades, and will serve to foster a renewed appreciation of the artist, whose figurative style goes against the conceptual and abstract bent of much contemporary art.
