Music will fill the night on Fairfield’s campus as both The Fairfield University Symphony Orchestra and The Fairfield University Jazz Ensemble hold their spring concerts on consecutive evenings, April 20 and April 21, 2016.

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (April 12, 2016) — Two celebrated Fairfield University musical groups will hold their spring concerts on consecutives nights, April 20 and 21, 2016. The first of the two concerts, by The Fairfield University Symphony Orchestra , will take place Wednesday, April 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the Quick Center for the Arts. The performance is free and open to both students and the community.

Fairfield University’s Spring Jazz Ensemble Concert will celebrate their 25th anniversary on the following evening Thursday, April 21 at 7:30 p.m. The concert will take place in Gonzaga Auditorium and tickets are available at the door for $5. All musical pieces performed on the night were arranged and composed by students Robby Schwartz, Amanda Ocasio, D.J. Horstmann and John Domenico.

“An International Affair” conducted by Mr. Jonathon Grauer and performed by The Fairfield University Symphony Orchestra will include pieces from a selection of both classical and international music including Coriolan Overture, Op. 62 , by Ludwig van Beethoven, Metalfare , by Ilari Hylkila and Japanese , by George Gershwin, and Spanish and Asian pieces. The orchestra includes both Fairfield University students and community members.

“The University Orchestra has been working tirelessly on the program for our concert,” said Marianne Rose Weber, Student Manager for the Orchestra. “We’ve prepared a spectacular program and can’t wait to see and hear how it will be received to the public.”

Professor Brian Torff and student leader, Robbie Schwartz, direct the Fairfield University Jazz Ensemble and welcome musician Steve Davis to perform with the students, who will show off their musical talents with their own arrangements and compositions. Mr. Davis is an internationally known trombonist and teaches music in the University of Hartford’s Hartt School’s African American music program.

“Performing a concert of solely student arrangements and compositions is unprecedented in our twenty-five year history as a jazz ensemble at Fairfield University,” said Torff. “These graduating seniors have raised the ensemble to a new level that we have never before seen since our inception in 1991. Over our 25 years we have performed with major artists in many memorable concerts. It is very gratifying to start an ensemble and see it grow over many decades.”
