Connecticut Writing Project to host writing workshop at Fairfield University downtown bookstore | Press Releases

Writers of all ages are invited to join published professionals for a family workshop on Saturday, April 23.

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (April 7, 2016) —The Connecticut Writing Project at Fairfield University will host “Writing in the Limelight: A Writing Workshop for Families with Award-Winning Words” at the Fairfield University Bookstore on April 23 . Bryan Ripley Crandall, PhD, CWP-Fairfield Director and Assistant Professor in Educational Studies and Teacher Preparation will lead the workshop along with teachers and published student writers. The event will include fun writing activities inspired by award-winning children’s books and young adult novels, which will also be on display at the bookstore

“Teachers and students who work with the Connecticut Writing Project have had their lives changed for the better,” says Dr. Crandall. “And last year, parents let me know that they wanted to be part of the fun, too. I reflected on my favorite children’s and young adult literature, and designed a workshop for families. We will be inspired by the words of great writers.”

In addition to the wide variety of books available at the bookstore, Dr. Crandall and young writers who have been published in POW! The Power of Words will lead an open-mic opportunity for attendees. POW! The Power of Words is CWP-Fairfield’s very own anthology, published yearly, featuring the writers at each summer program session. CWP-Fairfield’s Young Adult Literacy Labs occur during the month of July and August. The participants write poetry and script chapters for novels. They have the chance to be researchers and reporters, illustrators and playwrights. The program is open to children from grades 3-12, who congregate at Fairfield University during the summer months to learn from professional teachers and writers while attending Young Adult Literacy Labs.

Dr. Crandall has worked with award-winning authors such as Kwame Alexander and Matt de la Peña to provide writing events at Fairfield University, and has presented the publication of young writers from Connecticut at the National Council of Teachers of English, the National Writing Project, the Louisiana State University Young Adult Literature Conference, and the Literacy Research Association.
