Noted scholar and former director of the Institute of Jesuit Sources to speak about the suppression and revival of the Jesuits.

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (February 17) – Rev. John Padberg, S.J., former director of the Institute of Jesuit Sources, will present “On All Sides of a Controversy: The Jesuits—Suppression and Revival,” on Wednesday, February 25, at 8 p.m. in the Fairfield University Dolan School of Business Dining Room. The lecture, which will focus on the events surrounding Pope Clement XIV’s suppression of the Society of Jesus in 1773 and their eventual restoration by Pope Pius VII in 1814, is part of the 2014-2015 Center for Catholic Studies lecture series.

Fr. John Padberg was until recently the director and editor of the Institute of Jesuit Sources in St. Louis, Mo., which has published more than one hundred books on the history and spirituality of the Society of Jesus. From 1975 to 1985, he served as president of Weston Jesuit School of Theology, a national theological center in Cambridge, Massachusetts. While at Weston, he served as founding president of the international Conference of Catholic Theological Institutions. He has lectured extensively on the history of the Society of Jesus and on Jesuit education, including presentations over the years at all 28 U.S. Jesuit colleges and universities.
