Trumpeter Freddie Maxwell to perform with Fairfield University Jazz Ensemble

Seasoned musician has played with Frank Sinatra, Diana Ross and Christina Aguilera

Freddie Maxwell The Fairfield University Jazz Ensemble will present its annual winter concert with special guest trumpeter Freddie Maxwell at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, December 4, at the University’s Gonzaga Auditorium, Gonzaga Hall. The Ensemble is directed by Brian Q. Torff, Fairfield’s director of jazz and popular music. Tickets are $5 at the door.

Originally from Malone, N.Y., Freddie Maxwell has been a professional trumpet player, arranger, composer and music educator for the past three decades. He has toured with Alicia Keys, Lionel Hampton, Jimmy Dorsey, and the Glen Miller Orchestra among numerous other bands, performing in major cities throughout Europe, Asia, Australia, and the U.S. His impressive versatility has brought him to fans of nearly all music genres, including pop, rock, R&B, jazz, funk, big band, world, Latin, and classical. He has shared stages with Frank Sinatra, Dizzy Gillespie, Wynton Marsalis, Bon Jovi, The Eagles, Diana Ross, Barry White, The Temptations, Tina Turner, Mark Anthony, Tito Puente, Sérgio Mendes, and many more top musicians. Maxwell has also performed on recordings with Christina Aguilera (RCA Records), Jamie Block (Capitol Records), and Alicia Keys (Columbia Records). His national television performances include The Grammys, “The David Letterman Show,” and specials on BET and HBO.

The evening’s program includes a tribute to former Norwalk, Conn., resident Horace Silver, a highly influential pianist and composer in the 1950s and ‘60s who died earlier this year. The Ensemble will present his “Song for My Father,” “Peace” and “The Jody Grind.” In addition, they will play works by Thelonius Monk, Sy Oliver and Trummy Young and Jon Anderson, and the spiritual “Wade in the Water.”
