Fairfield University students raise money for MADD

Fundraiser and beach cleanup latest student service projects for Town

Representatives from the Fairfield Police Department and Mothers Against Drunk Driving With help from the Town of Fairfield Police Department, Fairfield University seniors living near the beach recently raised more than $1,100 to benefit Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). The Beach Residents Advocacy Group (BRAG) sponsored a ' Taco Loco food truck fundraiser’ near the Sea Grape, charging $2 per taco with every dollar raised going to MADD. Members of BRAG presented a check to MADD officials with the fundraiser proceeds at the police department on November 13, 2014.

"The [fundraiser] was a huge success," said Storm Miller ’15, a Management major in the Dolan School of Business, who helped organize it with Kevin Gavin, ’15 and Ellie Goepel, ’15, among others. "Lots of students turned out for it as well as neighbors."

MADD works in more than 600 communities across the country, and has more than 1,400 trained victim advocates on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week to support victims with comfort or legal assistance.

"I’m completely amazed by the support of the Fairfield University student body," said Jennifer R. Owen, walk manager of MADD, in the Connecticut State Office. "Fairfield University has taken our mission to heart, and is working hard to raise awareness."

The fundraiser comes in the wake of another service project for the Town. Members of BRAG and other Fairfield University students recently held a beach cleanup with more than two dozen students taking part. Also helping were Karen Donoghue, dean of students; Pejay Lucky, assistant director of residence life; and Ophelie Rowe-Allen, director of residence life.

"The Fairfield Beach Resident Board (neighbors) were very thankful for our efforts," said Miller. "At the end up of the clean up, we provided a free Super Duper Weenie truck for the entire beach community. I think it was an extremely positive step forward for us."
