Image: Bannow What: 'The 18th annual Excellence in Mathematics and Science Awards,' presented by Fairfield University's School of Engineering and Stratford, Conn.-based Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation . Juniors from public, private and Catholic high schools in Fairfield and New Haven Counties will be honored for demonstrating excellence in these subjects. In recognizing these students - some tomorrow's engineers and scientists - the University hopes to in turn inspire them to study and pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The event comes at a time when fewer young people are showing interest in these vital disciplines.

When: Tuesday, June 3, 2014, at noon.

Where: Fairfield University campus, Dolan School of Business Dining Room.

Who: About 30 secondary students, as well as Fairfield University administrators, faculty, and staff, plus proud parents, high school educators, and Sikorsky executives will attend the event.

Why: The 'Excellence in Mathematics and Science Awards' event is a long-term tradition at Fairfield and was established to encourage the continued study of math and science as a necessary foundation for further STEM study. These disciplines represent critical areas for the 21st Century. Past recipients have been told, "Some of you will make significant discoveries ... We need students like you. Keep following your dreams."
