Nursing professor named to highly selective leadership program | Press Releases

Image: N Manister Nancy Manister, DNS, FNP-BC, a faculty member of Fairfield University's School of Nursing, has been named to the prestigious 2014-2015 Nurse Faculty Leadership Academy (NFLA). The highly selective program was developed by Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) in partnership with the Elsevier Foundation to enhance the personal leadership development of new nurse faculty and foster academic career success.

Assistant Professor Manister, of Scarsdale, N.Y., is a board certified-family nurse practitioner and clinical nurse specialist with extensive experience working in hospital and community settings. She focuses on Women's Health and College Health. She recently completed a study of stress, eating behaviors, and obesity in the clergy. This week, Dr. Manister began her NFLA participation by attending a workshop in Indianapolis, which has brought together scholars, leadership mentors, and faculty advisors nationwide.

"This new group of mentors and mentees represents a great addition to the community of nurse leaders that has evolved over the years as a result of this program," said David Ruth, executive director of The Elsevier Foundation, in a news release. "We are proud to sponsor this program for a third time, especially because it continues to build a learning-and-sharing network that improves nursing education and healthcare."

The NFLA supports the recommendations of the 2010 Institute of Medicine report, "The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health," that calls for "health organizations, including nursing organizations and nursing schools, to provide nurses greater opportunities to gain leadership skills and put them into practice." The academy pairs full-time, non-tenured faculty leaders, called 'scholars,' with experienced leadership mentors who are then supported by NFLA faculty members. Dr. Manister's mentor is Keville C. Frederickson, Ed.D., RN, FAAN, of City University of New York.

"Scholars in the Nurse Faculty Leadership Academy will learn from outstanding nurse leaders and leverage their experience to transform their colleges and universities," said STTI President, Hester C. Klopper, Ph.D., MBA, RN, RM, FANSA, in a press release issued by the organization. "I congratulate all 28 participants and applaud their role as leaders who will train future generations of nurses worldwide."
