Film series brings world famous art exhibition to big screen

Quick Center for the Arts presents a screening of the film "Vermeer and Music: The Art of Love and Leisure" , at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, October 10, 2013. The film, shown in HD, examines the life and work of Johannes Vermeer, (1632-1675), the celebrated Dutch 17th century master. It also focuses on the recent retrospective exhibition at The National Gallery, London, and is part of EXHIBITION , a series of films which bring world famous art exhibitions to the big screen. Tickets are $15, general admission; $10, student and child; and $5 for Fairfield University faculty, staff, and students.

Host Tim Marlow goes beyond the exhibition to tell the entire life story of Vermeer, one of the most startling and fascinating artists of all, and painter of the famous "Girl with a Pearl Earring." Many of the artist's other captivating works are highlighted. The National Gallery's "Vermeer and Music: The Art of Love and Leisure," which closed in September 2013, explored the musical pastimes of the 17th-century Netherlands by uniting the art of Vermeer and his contemporaries with rare musical instruments and songbooks. Music was one of the most popular themes in Dutch painting and carried many diverse associations. In portraits, a musical instrument or songbook might suggest the education or social position of the sitter; in scenes of everyday life, it might act as a metaphor for harmony, or a symbol of transience. For the first time the National Gallery's two paintings by Vermeer, "A Young Woman standing at a Virginal" and "A Young Woman seated at a Virginal" are brought together with Vermeer's "Guitar Player," on loan from the Iveagh Bequest, Kenwood House. The exhibition also displayed 17th-century virginals (a type of harpsichord), guitars and lutes alongside the paintings to offer unique insights into the painters' choice of instruments, and juxtapose the difference between the real instruments and the way in which the painters chose to represent them.
