Professor to read from her creative nonfiction at Fairfield University Bookstore | Press Releases

Image: S Huber Sonya Huber, assistant professor of English at Fairfield University, will read from and discuss her book "Opa Nobody" at 7 p.m. on Thursday, February 21, at Fairfield University Bookstore, 1499 Post Road, Fairfield. Free and open to the public, this event is part of The Inspired Writer Series of the MFA in Creative Writing Program at Fairfield.

"Opa Nobody" (University of Nebraska Press, 2008) chronicles Dr. Huber's search for meaning and resonance in the life of the grandfather she never met, Heina Buschman, a beleaguered but committed German socialist activist often dismissed as the "family nobody." Through her research, she found an average man trying to survive the Nazis and rebuild a broken world.

"In his world - a sooty Germany awash in communist, socialist, and fascist movements - we feel the urgency and impact of personal politics as history gathers the factions in its maelstrom," wrote a Publisher's Weekly reviewer.

"Opa Nobody" was shortlisted for the Saroyan Prize. Her second book, "Cover Me: A Health Insurance Memoir" (University of Nebraska Press, 2010), was a finalist for the ForeWord Book of the Year. She has written a textbook, "The Backwards Research Guide for Writers: Using Your Life for Reflection, Connection, and Inspiration (Equinox Publishing, 2011), and she teaches creative nonfiction, publishing, editing and composition at Fairfield.
