Fairfield University's Learning for a Lifetime program invites the public to audit several undergraduate courses and attend three timely symposia this fall on Cuba, the ethics of healthcare and border politics. New and returning members may learn more about all planned events at an open house on Tuesday, August 20, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Aloysius P. Kelley, S.J. Center on campus.

Learning for a Lifetime is a group of intellectually curious individuals who enjoy being part of the University community. Membership entitles participants to audit one or two undergraduate courses a semester and attend monthly symposia, thought-provoking lectures presented by Fairfield faculty. In addition, Fairfield professors often lead trips of historical and cultural interest and a week of engaging classes is offered each June.

This fall's symposia series begins Thursday, September 12 with "Cuba" presented by Victor Deupi, Ph.D., who recently returned from a cultural trip to the island nation. Dr. Deupi, a Cuban-American who teaches architecture, art history and history of furniture at Fairfield, will offer his insights into the country's architectural treasures as well as a people few Americans have had the opportunity to meet. The symposium begins at 1:30 p.m. in the Kelley Center presentation room.

Curt Naser, Ph.D., a practicing bioethicist and associate professor of philosophy, will present "The Ethics of Healthcare" at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 10 at the Fairfield University Bookstore, 1499 Post Road, Fairfield. With so many questions being raised about the future of healthcare, Dr. Naser will address some of the principle concerns many have in anticipation of the new healthcare bill taking effect in January 2014.

The final symposium of the season is "Border Politics" with Janie Leatherman, Ph.D., professor of politics and international studies, which will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 14, at the Fairfield University Bookstore. Dr. Leatherman will highlight some of the most pressing issues being debated nationwide, including globalizations, state sovereignty, immigration, the "war on terror," and environmental sustainability.

Learning for a Lifetime members may wish to audit one of several courses being offered this fall on a space-available basis, including "Islam in America," "Border Politics," Modern China" and "The Supreme Court."

With enrollment, members also receive a Fairfield University ID card, free parking, select discounts at Quick Center events, use of the Leslie C. Quick Jr. Recreational Complex (for an additional discounted fee), and access to the DiMenna-Nyselius Library and many other lectures taking place on campus or at the downtown Fairfield University bookstore each semester.
