Image: Fairfield University What: Sixty-five teachers from Bridgeport's Bassick High School will attend a professional development day on the teaching of writing and interdisciplinary planning at Fairfield University.

When: August 26, 2013, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.  University President Jeffrey P. von Arx, S.J., will welcome the teachers at 9 a.m., followed by a day of workshops that address best practices for teaching writing, initiating yearlong schedule changes at Bassick that will partner teachers on interdisciplinary teams.

Details: With National Writing Project funding, Bryan Ripley Crandall, Ph.D., director of the Connecticut Writing Project–Fairfield, and Bassick Principal Wayne Alexander created this professional development day through a federal SEED grant (supporting effective educator development) to initiate cross-disciplinary conversations on literacy and team-teaching, and to think through best practices that align curricular goals with Common Core State Standards. The goal is to build teacher leadership.
