Fairfield University receives national recognition for civic engagement

Image: Students involved with Hunger Cleanup For the seventh year in a row, Fairfield University has been named to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for being a leader in building a campus-wide culture of service learning, volunteering and civic engagement.

The Honor Roll is sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency that leads President Obama's national call to service initiative.

"There are so many reasons why Fairfield University has made the Honor Roll every year since it was founded," said Melissa Quan, director of the Office of Service Learning and associate director of the Center for Faith and Public Life, noting Fairfield strives to integrate community engagement in teaching, research and co-curricular activities. "As a Jesuit institution, the University's commitment to service is at the heart of its strategic plan."

Those hours reflect such efforts as international and domestic service trips organized by Campus Ministry, University Activities, student clubs and academics. Fairfield's abundant service learning courses feature business students preparing taxes of Greater Bridgeport's low income residents; engineering students building web sites for non-profits; and nursing students making children aware of the value of good nutrition, exercise and hygiene. Community partnerships involve students helping at the Adrienne Kirby Family Literacy Project and the Health Promotion Center for Older Adults.
