The 2012 Catholicism and the Arts Lecture: "From Space to Place: the Landscapes of Jesuit Higher Education," by Rev. Thomas Lucas, S.J., professor of Art & Architecture, University of San Francisco

In what promises to be a richly illustrated lecture, Rev. Thomas Lucas, S.J., an internationally recognized expert in Jesuit art history, will speak at Fairfield University about the profound connection between St. Ignatius' vision of urban engagement and Jesuit colleges and universities.

Free and open to the public, Fr. Lucas's talk - "From Space to Place: The Landscapes of Jesuit Higher Education" - will take place Thursday, November 8, 2012, at 8 p.m., in the Dolan School of Business Dining Room.

The event is the 2012 Catholicism and the Arts Lecture, and it's also part of Fairfield University's celebration of cities. "Cities are at the heart of the Jesuit mission, and Jesuit colleges are found at the heart of great cities around the globe," said Fr. Lucas, professor of Art and Architecture at the University of San Francisco (USF) and founding director of its' Thacher Gallery.

A well-known liturgical designer and artist with an international portfolio, Fr. Lucas's work has been recognized with an award from the American Institute of Architects, and his projects range from glass and liturgical furnishing designs for more than a dozen churches and chapels to service as a design consultant for the restoration of the St. Ignatius Cathedral in Shanghai.

His book, "Landmarking: City, Church, and Jesuit Urban Strategy" (Chicago: Loyola Press), won an Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU) National Book Award.

Fr. Lucas, who received his doctorate in Theology and the Arts from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California, joined the USF Faculty in 1995 after serving for three years as the National Secretary for Communications at the U.S. Jesuit Conference in Washington, D.C. At USF, he served as founding chair of the Fine and Performing Arts Programs. After directing a joint degree program with the California College of the Arts for five years, he proposed, designed, and saw USF's Department of Art+Architecture through to establishment. He is the founding director of the University's Kalmanovitz Sculpture Terrace.
