Prolific author Paul Mariani to speak at Fairfield University

Image: Paul Mariani Paul Mariani, acclaimed author of 17 books and more than 200 essays and reviews, will read from his latest book of poetry at 7 p.m. on Thursday, November 29 at the Aloysius P. Kelley, S.J. Center at Fairfield University. This event, part of the Inspired Writer series sponsored by the University's MFA in Creative Writing Program, is free and open to the public.

Mariani, University professor of English at Boston College, has written seven volumes of poetry, as well as five biographies of poets, including William Carlos Williams, John Berryman, Robert Lowell, Hart Crane and Gerard Manley Hopkins. All have been listed as notable books by The New York Times and his biography of Williams was short-listed for the American Book Award. He has written four critical studies and a spiritual memoir, "Thirty Days: On Retreat with the Exercises of St. Image: Paul Mariani book Ignatius." His latest work is a "verse biography" entitled "Epitaphs for the Journey: New, Selected, and Revised Poems."

Mariani has won some of the country's most prestigious fellowships including awards from The Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Endowment for the Arts, as well as the John Ciardi Award for Lifetime Achievement in Poetry in 2009. His life of Hart Crane, "The Broken Tower," was made into a feature-length film directed and starring James Franco.
