"We are very fortunate to have Drs. Coan and Ballard as part of the Open VISIONS Forum lecture series," said Dr. Diane Brousseau. "Dr. Ballard's many contributions in the field of ocean science are recognized worldwide. Their pioneering efforts to bring the most recent discoveries in oceanography into the classroom serve as a model for science education."

"Stories of the exploration of undersea marine life and the wrecks put there by man have fascinated people around the world decades, myself included," added Dr. Brian Walker. "We are fortunate to have these two exciting experts from the worlds of oceanic exploration and education join us at Fairfield University."

Dr. Robert D. Ballard has long been associated with the National Geographic Society and is credited with the underwater discovery in 1985 of the RMS Titanic, the ill-fated British passenger liner that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean in 1912. His 1997 bestselling book, "Lost Liners," told the story of the great transatlantic liners through memorable wrecks he has visited. Robert Ballard has also hosted National Geographic Television's "Explorer" program and acted as a special adviser on Stephan Spielberg's futuristic "Sea Quest" television show. Each year, Dr. Ballard takes thousands of schoolchildren on an interactive expedition through the innovative JASON Project. He is also the president of the Sea Research Foundation's Institute for Exploration at Mystic Aquarium.
