Fairfield University receives Santa Energy Green Business Award

Image: Red to Green Fairfield University has gone green in a big way, from its eco-friendly power plant to its hybrid shuttle bus, energy smart lights, and campus garden.

For its concerted efforts, the Bridgeport Regional Business Council (BRBC) awarded the university with the 2011 Santa Energy Green Business Award. Sponsored by Santa Energy, the award was established to recognize and celebrate a regional business that has shown leadership in environmentally positive products, services or practices. The business must have a proven track record that exemplifies a long-term commitment to environmental sustainability.

David Frassinelli, associate vice president of Facilities Management at Fairfield, accepted the honor on behalf of the university at the BRBC's 137th annual meeting attended by about 400 area business professionals. "Knowing the impressive corporations considered for the award, we are quite honored to receive this," said Frassinelli, chair of the university's Campus Sustainability Committee. "I accept this as the university continues its multi-faceted, ongoing plan to reduce its campus carbon footprint."

From fiscal year 2009-10, Fairfield reduced its carbon footprint by seven percent. It's reflective of a University-wide pledge, led by President Rev. Jeffrey P. von Arx, S.J., who signed the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment (ACUPCC) that calls for an intense commitment to sustainability.

Selection criteria to be considered for the award included: environmental sustainability incorporated into the mission / vision of the business; sustainable business products / services, initiatives and practices; relevant industry certifications or recognitions achieved; owners/officers promote the value of sustainable practices to employees and recognize "green" behaviors; and marketing and communications highlight sustainable and "green" practices / initiatives. The Greater Bridgeport Community Enterprises, Inc. - The Green Team received honorable mention.

As a Jesuit institution, Fairfield strives to be a steward of the Earth, as well as a good citizen and neighbor. Not only is sustainability a hallmark of the university's mission but it is also a major component of the vision, and guides the university's day-to day operations. The green movement continues to grow - through student activism, faculty research, campus building, renovation and energy projects, and an array of eco-friendly programs offered throughout the year.
