Budding scientists and engineers from area high schools to be honored at Fairfield University School of Engineering event co-sponsored by Sikorsky Aircraft


High School students from all over Fairfield County and New Haven County will be in attendance for this awards presentation

Image: Sikorsky award winners What: Fairfield University's School of Engineering and Stratford, Conn.-based Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. present the 'Excellence in Mathematics and Science Awards' luncheon, recognizing 30 high school juniors from schools in Connecticut for their academic achievements in science and mathematics. The students are residents of the following towns: Bridgeport, Fairfield, Stratford, Trumbull, Weston, Westport, Darien, Greenwich, Stamford, Ansonia, Bethany, Seymour, Shelton, Bethel, Brookfield, Danbury, Newtown, Sandy Hook, Branford, Milford, and West Haven, Conn.

When: Tuesday, June 7, 2011, at noon

Where: Alumni House, on the Fairfield University campus.

Background: The event recognizes students from public, private and Catholic schools. Each student will be presented with a medal and certificate. While honoring these budding engineers and scientists, the annual event observes the importance of having young people pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The recipients attend the following high schools: Fairfield Ludlowe High School, Fairfield College Preparatory School, Fairfield Warde High School, Amity Regional Senior High School, Ansonia High School, Bassick High School, Bethel High School, Bunnell High School, Central Magnet High School, Common Ground, Darien High School, Greenwich High School, Harding High School, Henry Abbott, Immaculate High School, Joseph A. Foran High School, Kolbe-Cathedral High School, Lauralton Hall, Newtown High School, Notre Dame High School, Platt Voc. Tech., Seymour High School, Shelton High School, St. Joseph High School, Staples High School, Stratford High School, Trinity Catholic High School, Trumbull High School, Westhill High School, and Weston High School.

Speakers at the event will include Susan Hitchcock from Sikorsky; Lauren Loomer, a Fairfield University mechanical engineering graduate who now works at Sikorsky; she will describe her experience studying at the School of Engineering; and Ryan Munden, assistant professor of electrical engineering, who will give a technical presentation about nanotechnology and nanoscience.
