Summer Festival Chorus to rock the Quick Center once again with "Bach Meets the Boys of Summer"

Image: Summer Festival Chorus The Summer Festival Chorus returns to the Quick Center for the Arts on Saturday, July 30, at 7:30 p.m. for another adventurous evening of music. Conductor Carole Ann Maxwell, D.S.M., always brings excitement and color to each summer production, now in its 18th year, and this year's program is no exception as "Bach Meets the Boys of Summer."

Yes, that's as in "Johann Sebastian Bach," the number one composer on the top ten greatest list. His Lobet den Herrn , alle Heiden BWV 230 , a joyous hymn of praise to God that incorporates the brief but powerful text of Psalm 117, and the familiar, gentle and uplifting Cantata No. 147 will mix it up with pop and Broadway hits made popular by the "Boys of Summer," including the Jersey Boys and the Beach Boys.

Dr. Maxwell is a vibrant conductor who each summer brings together talented singers to perform a challenging but always fun and uplifting program. Themes from past summers have included "Americanarama featuring American spirituals and Broadway tunes and "Hooked on Classics," a tribute to Mozart and other pre-Romantic era composers and their modern counterparts.

The sopranos, tenors, altos and bass/baritones who comprise the Summer Festival Chorus come from near and far to work with Dr. Maxwell and perform for a packed house at the Kelley Theatre. They are joined by special guests, the popular jazz performer and composer Joe Utterback, and brilliant accompanist Beth Palmer.

Dr. Maxwell has served as director of choral and liturgical music for Fairfield University since 1980 and is the artistic director and conductor of the Mendelssohn Choir of Connecticut. She has conducted the Summer Festival Chorus since its inception, each year delighting audiences with her ability to blend and complement the music of artists from widely different eras and styles of music.
