Fairfield University reaches out to educators with "An Evening for Educators with Mike Anderson" author of The Well-Balanced Teacher | Press Releases

Image: Mike Anderson As the end of the school year nears, Fairfield University's Graduate School of Education and Allied Professions (GSEAP) invites teachers to stop for an evening and spend some time regenerating their innate enthusiasm when Mike Anderson, author of "The Well-Balanced Teacher" spends "An Evening for Educators" at Fairfield University's Alumni House on Thursday, April 28 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Admission is free for this event. The Fairfield Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa sponsors the event with support from GSEAP.

Anderson, a professional development specialist and consulting teacher for the non-profit organization Northeast Foundation for Children, is keenly aware that teachers today, are under immense amounts of stress. According to Anderson, intense stress may be the reason teachers place their own well being on the back burner. He believes that the results are predictable: "They burn out. They disconnect. They don't have the positive energy and sharp intellect needed to be great teachers and students are the ones who suffer."

This event is designed to encourage practicing classroom teachers to explore practical strategies for staying balanced and sane so that he or she can be the teacher one's students deserve.

"At Fairfield, we have noticed the stresses that classroom teachers face on a daily basis and the conflicting demands made on them. We hope that events like this one will help support them so that they can take better care of themselves and flourish as educators," said Wendy Kohli, Ph.D., professor of curriculum and instruction. "Mike Anderson has spent years evaluating these issues and we are pleased to make his valuable expertise available to community teachers."

The Northeast Foundation for Children supports teachers across the United States in implementing responsive classroom teaching practices. In 2004, Anderson was awarded a national Milken Educator Award for excellence in teaching and he was a finalist for New Hampshire Teacher of the Year in 2005. He is also the co-author of "The Research-Ready Classroom."
