Fairfield University professor inducted into prestigious National Academies of Practice, an organization that gives expert advice to policy makers | Press Releases

Campbell, Ph.D., WHNP-BC, associate dean for Academic Programs at Fairfield University's School of Nursing , has been inducted into the Nursing Academy of the National Academies of Practice (NAP), an organization influential at the national level in projects promoting interdisciplinary healthcare.

Founded in 1981, NAP is comprised of distinguished practitioners and scholars from all of the primary health professions, including medicine, psychology, social work, and nursing. It gives expert advice to public policy makers on healthcare issues, using its unique perspective - that of expert practitioners and scholars joined in interdisciplinary dialogue.

Campbell, of Newtown, Connecticut, has research interests in women's health, lactation, and simulation pedagogy. "What are most exciting to me about this opportunity are the interdisciplinary focus, health care professionals working together, and the focus on access to quality health care," Campbell said of her induction. "An area I hope to continue to explore is my work with vulnerable women who want to breastfeed but don't have access to the professional resources to succeed. I also look forward to working with colleagues at practice improvement, science advancement, and policy change."

Jeanne Novotny, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, dean of the School of Nursing, said the school is proud of Dr. Campbell's outstanding achievement. "Suzanne joins an impressive group of colleagues, all who share a similar vision for nursing in the 21st century."

Campbell's fellow colleagues in nursing include Family Nurse Practitioners, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists , and major nursing leaders (including Barbara Blakeney, former American Nurses Association president).

After attending NAP's gala membership banquet in Arlington, Virginia, Campbell returned to campus to learn of another honor: She won the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL)'s Excellence in the Academic Setting Award - Mentoring category, for 2011. As project director of the university's School of Nursing Robin Kanarek '96 Learning Resource Center, she helps to oversee simulation learning in a state-of-the-art facility.

Eileen R. O'Shea, DNP, was among the Fairfield faculty who nominated Campbell for the honor because of her commitment to the integration of simulation technology. "It has been quite remarkable," noted O'Shea, assistant professor of nursing. "Suzanne has mentored faculty to embrace this exciting teaching methodology. The results of her efforts have not only enhanced student learning, but have also provided many opportunities for faculty to disseminate our experiences through publications and presentations."

Campbell is co-editor of the book, " Simulation Scenarios for Nurse Educators: Making it REAL," and has just had the 2nd edition book proposal approved ( New York, N.Y.: Springer Publishing Company, Inc., 2009). She earned an M.S. in nursing from the University of Connecticut and a Ph.D. in nursing from the University of Rhode Island. She obtained a post-master's certificate as a women's health nurse practitioner from Boston College.
