Academic awards ceremony recognizes outstanding liberal arts students at Fairfield University | Press Releases

For Fairfield University, what began as a small ceremony over 30 years ago has grown into a prestigious event that university officials say recognizes the best and brightest students from the institution.

Image: Barone Campus Center More than 60 students from the College of Arts and Sciences will take center stage and be honored for their extraordinary academic accomplishments at the university's annual Arts and Sciences Awards ceremony on Thursday, April 28 at 6 p.m. in the Oak Room of the Barone Campus Center.

Family and friends as well as university administrators, academic deans, and faculty, will join the award recipients, where they will be recognized for their scholarly achievements, research, and contributions to the university.

The annual event is the highlight of the academic year for the College of Arts and Sciences. "It is a pleasure for me and the faculty to acknowledge the intellectual achievements of our students," said Robbin Crabtree, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Fairfield University.

Crabtree explained that each year the university celebrates the academic accomplishments of its students, mainly graduating seniors. Each department and program has awards, usually for a top student or project. "This is one event when we see not only the high quality of students who go to Fairfield, but the ways their time at Fairfield has been transformative for them," she said. Crabtree will welcome the students and provide opening remarks at the ceremony.

Event organizers said one of the many highlights of the evening will be the presentation of the Lieutenant William Koscher Award in Arts and the College of Arts and Sciences Award in Science and Mathematics, which will be given to students who have earned the highest overall grade point average in four years at Fairfield.

In addition, 46 students will be inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. The nation's oldest academic honor society, Phi Beta Kappa recognizes academic excellence in the liberal arts and sciences.
