When Doug Varone and Dancers take the stage at Fairfield University's Quick Center for the Arts on Friday, Oct. 1 at 8 p.m., the audience will have the privilege of seeing the World Premiere of "Chapters from a Broken Novel," a major new work by the Company, with choreography by Varone and music by David Van Tieghem. There will be a post-show Art-to-Heart Q & A with the company following the performance. This is a presentation of the University's Arts & Minds season.

The Company will mark its 25th Anniversary next season and since its founding in 1986, Doug Varone and Dancers has commanded attention for its expansive vision, versatility and technical prowess. Varone's kinetically thrilling dances make essential connections and mine the complexity of the human spirit. From the smallest gesture to full-throttle bursts of movement, Varone's work can literally take your breath away.

The University will host the Company for a weeklong residency that culminates in the World Premiere on Friday.

This powerful new work is the product of years of collecting; phrases, snippets of conversation, found quotes and vivid images gathered together in the pages of a notebook. As the touchstone for "Chapters from a Broken Novel," Varone crafts these treasures into a vivid, physically charged evening-length work rife with humor and pathos. Twenty-two "chapters" unfold to reveal a teeming world of everyday moments exposed for all of their beauty and rawness, embraced by a bold, cinematic score by Van Tieghem.

During the week prior to the performance, Varone will bring his concept of a "mapping" workshop to the membership of the Cultural Alliance of Fairfield County (CAFC). Ryan Odinak, executive director of CAFC extolled the importance of this opportunity to the membership and ultimately to the community, "This workshop, which is entitled "Building Bridges to Diverse Audiences," will provide our members with valuable insights into the complexities of the diverse markets they serve. We expect that attendees will come away with new ideas for strengthening community ties, and for linking cultural partnerships to business results. Thanks to the generosity of Fairfield University, this workshop will build professional expertise for our members." The workshop is designed to investigate communication and interaction - to explore, through a series of movement and verbal exercises, how our identities aspirations, backgrounds and beliefs are shared.

Varone is an award-winning choreographer and director who works in dance, theater, opera, film, television and fashion. He is a passionate educator and articulate advocate for dance. His Company is among the most sought after ambassadors and educators in the field.
