Taking care of the city - Fairfield University students give back to Bridgeport families with Tubs of Love

Service to others has always been at the very heart of the Fairfield University experience, and as the holidays approach, a group of college students are taking time out from their classes to give back to families in need that live in the Bridgeport area.

On Sunday, Dec. 5, the Fairfield University Student Association (FUSA) will host a community-wide service event to benefit the Bridgeport Rescue Mission and Prospect House. University President Jeffrey von Arx, S.J., will also deliver remarks on the importance of community service.

Chrissy Perez, a member of FUSA, is part of an army of 85 do-gooders that will be making a difference this year. "As representatives of a Jesuit university, we feel empowered by the ability to help those around us. During the holidays there is so much to give, and we believe this project is a perfect opportunity for students and the community to give back, and make it special for those families who need assistance," said Perez.

The event will take place at 1 p.m. in the lower level of the Barone Campus Center, and the net result will include non-perishable food items, hygiene products, blankets, and winter crafts. The deadline to donate items is Monday, Nov. 29. Students will deliver the 'tubs of love' baskets to the Bridgeport based charity on Dec. 8.

Lauren Johnson, who is the vice president of FUSA said, "We're excited to embrace the spirit of giving during this holiday season, and to use our resources to give back to those in need."
