Fairfield University Glee Club presents Holiday Music Treasures December 3 and 4

Image: Glee Club The Fairfield University Glee Club led by conductor Carole Ann Maxwell, D.S.M. reaches into its 2010 bag of gifts to present "Holiday Music Treasures," the popular holiday concert at the Quick Center for the Arts on Friday, Dec. 3 at 8 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 4 at 2 p.m. Joining the Glee Club is the Fairfield University Chamber Singers with Festival Brass and Percussion. Tickets are $10, adults and $6, students. The concert is an Arts & Minds presentation.

Continuing the year of Global Citizenship, Conductor Maxwell has chosen a variety of music from around the world. Beth Palmer accompanies the ensemble.

The concert begins with Latin and James Whitbourn's "Missa Carolae" and continues with a traditional Basque piece, "Gabriel's Message" that features Anna Wolk on violin and Catherine Wolk on cello. The African selection "Betelehemu" by Via Olatunji and Wendell Whalum is sung in the native language, Yoruba, with soloist baritone Alex Peras and percussionists Nick Restivo and Bradley Fay and Casey Grambo. The Chamber Singers sing Bach's "Cantata No. 140 Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme" in German.

It wouldn't be a holiday concert without a "Carole Sing" and the conductor has some traditional and festive choices up her sleeve. Directors of Sweet Harmony, Elizabeth DeSiena, Caroline McGuirk and Rebecca Mohns perform "The Bensonians" led by Joseph Quinn. The full Glee Club performs a 70s holiday collage featuring Paul Simon's "Bridge Over Troubled Water," Charles Fox and Norman Gimbel's "Killing Me Softly" and Daniel Kantor's "Night of Silence." The rousing "Gloria in excelsis" from "Missa Carolae" sends the audience out on a jubilant note.
