Field hockey helps raise money for Play 4 The Cure and breast cancer research

Image: Field hockey The Fairfield University field hockey team joined the fight against breast cancer by participating in the Fairfield Play 4 The Cure program which ran through the month of October. On Tuesday night, Head Coach Jackie Kane presented a check for nearly $13,000 which will be distributed to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for Breast Cancer, in addition to Norwalk and Stamford Hospitals' mammogram clincis for those in need.

The Stags started the month of fundraising events on October 3 when they hosted youth programs from Darien, Wilton, and Trumbull before their contest with Saint Joseph's University. The youth teams played a doubleheader before the collegiate game. During the day, funds were raised through t-shirt sales, raffles, and donations, all of which collected over $5,000. A pre-game ceremony included breast cancer survivors, who were presented flowers by their daughters who played that day.

During the rest of the month, Fairfield Country high schools and youth programs joined the fight as well. Warde High School, McMahon High School, New Canaan High School, Westport High School, Darien High School, Westhill High School and Wilton High School raised funds for Play 4 The Cure. And, youth field hockey programs from New Fairfield, Westport, Wilton, Darien, and Trumbull also signed on for this cause.

By selling t-shirts, conducting bake sales and raffles, as well as soliciting donations, the high schools and youth programs raised the final total to $12,787.

"We are extremely proud to be part of this effort," Fairfield University Field Hockey Coach Jackie Kane said. "So many people have been afftected by breast cancer, including our team. The student-athletes really took this to heart and made it a success. We hope to be part of Play 4 The Cure every year."

The teams and coaches would also like to thank DeBeers and Longstreth Sporting Goods which provided pink balls and pink pre-wrap for all of the games.
