Fairfield University Glee Club presents its spring concert Double Your Pleasure with special guest artist

Image: Carol Anne Maxwell The Fairfield University Glee Club presents its spring concert, "Double Your Pleasure," under the dynamic baton of Carole Ann Maxwell, D.S.M. on Saturday, April 18 at 8:00 p.m. at the Quick Center for the Arts. Joining the Glee Club as a special guest artist is Fairfield University Academic Vice President Dr. Orin Grossman. Beth Palmer accompanies the Glee Club.  Admission is $10 general, $6 students.

Dr. Maxwell is a never-ending source of musical diversity, always choosing a program that illuminates the particular strengths of ensemble members while continuing to challenge them.

The concert begins in a celebratory mood with Austrian composer Iván Eröd's "Viva la Musica," and is followed by the works of composers as varied as Felix Mendelssohn, Christopher Tin, Adolphus Hailstork and George Gershwin. The evening's fare spotlights Jonathan Haskins, director of the Men's Ensemble, and Lauren Wantuck and Jennifer Meuser, Sweet Harmony directors as well as the Chamber Singers and the women of the Glee Club.

Dr. Grossman, a specialist in the music of George Gershwin, has performed concerts of his own song transcriptions and classical pieces to critical praise around the world, notably in Cairo, New York and Florence, Italy. He gave the Russian premiere of Gershwin's "Second Rhapsody" with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic in St. Petersburg.

The Glee Club joins him in presenting "A Gershwin Portrait" that includes "Rhapsody in Blue," "Strike Up the Band," "I Got Rhythm" and "An American in Paris." Dr. Grossman will play additional solos.

Tin's "Baba Yetu" appeared in the computer game, "Civilization IV," and is sung here in Swahili; Hailstork's work blends musical ideas from African American and European traditions and the Glee Club delivers a jaunty rendition of "What Shall We Do With a Drunken Sailor," a traditional sea chantey arranged by Don Morris.
