John E. Thiel, Ph.D., professor of religious studies at Fairfield University, has been elected Vice President of the Catholic Theological Society of America (CTSA) and will assume the presidency of the CTSA in June 2011.

Dr. Thiel is the author of 5 books, including "Senses of Tradition: Continuity and Development in Catholic Faith" (Oxford University Press, 2000) and "God, Evil, and Innocent Suffering: A Theological Reflection" (Crossroad, 2002). His articles have appeared in "Theological Studies," "The Heythrop Journal," "New Theology Review," "Horizons, Philosophy and Theology," and "The Month."

Twice a recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Dr. Thiel was elected to membership in the American Theological Society in 2006. Currently, he sits on the board of editorial consultants of the Jesuit-sponsored journal "Theological Studies," and serves as Vice-President of the Catholic Theological Society of America.

At Fairfield University, Thiel has served as Chair of the Department of Religious Studies and currently is Director of the University Honors Program.

With over 1300 members, the Catholic Theological Society of America is the largest professional society of Roman Catholic theologians in the world. The election of officers took place at the 64th Annual convention, held in June in Halifax, Nova Scotia with nearly 350 participants primarily from the United States, but also representing Canada, Australia and other countries.
