Latin American specialist and Fairfield University alumnus to speak at Fairfield University

Dr. Michael E. Allison, assistant professor of political science at the University of Scranton and a graduate of Fairfield University, will speak on "Democracy in Post-Civil War Central America," on Thursday, October 9, at 4 p.m. in the Multi-Media Room of the DiMenna-Nyselius Library at Fairfield University. This public lecture is being sponsored by the Program in Latin American and Caribbean Studies and the Department of Politics.

Dr. Allison specializes in Latin American Studies and has done fieldwork in El Salvador and Guatemala and taught in Costa Rica and El Salvador. He has published articles for scholarly journals including "The Transition from Armed Opposition to Electoral Opposition in Central America," and "Corrupted Perceptions: The Effect of Corruption on Political Support in Latin American Democracies," with Damarys Canache in Latin American Politics and Society . The article, "Territorial Integrity Treaties and Armed Conflict over Territory" with Paul Hensel and Ahmed Khanani, will be published in Conflict Management and Peace Science in 2009.

Dr. Allison, who was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to El Salvador following his 1996 graduation from Fairfield, researched the country's political party system in the post-civil war period. He went on to earn his Master's degree and Doctorate from Florida State University.
