Fairfield University Model UN High School Conference 2008 - November 21 | Press Releases

Who: Fairfield University’s Model United Nations team of students hosts over 200 high school students from Conn., N.Y. and N.J. for the fifth annual Model UN High School Conference. The Fairfield Model UN is a student organization that participates in several Model UN conferences each year.

What: The Fairfield University Model UN team has organized and will chair the one-day conference. Participants act as representatives of various countries and various Cabinet positions in simulations mimicking the UN General Assembly and UN committees facing issues of global importance.

This year’s committees and their focuses include: The United Nations Peace Building Commission - Security Sector Reform; Special Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council - issues in Tibet; European Union (EU) - conflict in Kosovo and the legitimacy of Kosovar independence; World Bank - loan proposals to the Board of Governors including debate on acceptance, declination or postponement of proposals; The Organization of American States (OAS) - conflicts between Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela; Chinese, United States and Russian Cabinets - avoiding the next world war, a joint simulation involving cooperative discussion and ad-hoc decision making.
