Newly elected Phi Beta Kappa members announced at Fairfield University

Fairfield University has announced the election of 9 juniors and 44 seniors to Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest and most prestigious academic honor society. To be considered for this honor, students must rank in the top 10 percent of the class, major in liberal arts or sciences, and distinguish themselves as scholars in their chosen fields.

Curt Naser, Ph.D., associate professor of philosophy and president of Phi Beta Kappa Connecticut Chapter, Zeta, said the 53 newly elected students were drawn from more than 500 nominations of 170 eligible students submitted by 110 faculty. The number of inductees is limited to 10 percent of the graduating class of Arts & Sciences majors, in keeping with the chapter's by-laws.

Also inducted at a ceremony, to be held on April 15, will be Ellen M. Umansky, Ph.D., the Carl and Dorothy Bennett Professor of Judaic Studies at Fairfield. She is the author of "From Christian Science to Jewish Science: Spiritual Healing and American Jews," Oxford University Press, and "Four Centuries of Jewish Women's Spirituality," Beacon Press. She has published articles on "Jewish Religious Life in America," "Women and Rabbinical Ordination: A Viable Option?" and "Zionism and Reform Judaism: A Theological Reassessment."
