University College at Fairfield University announces two July courses; one that offers valuable insight into the art and conduct of diplomacy in Latin America and the other, in Latin American environmental problems and conflicts with emphasis on challenges in Brazil.

Visiting Brazilian scholar and Associate Professor of philosophy Dr. Paula M. Martins' course, AE 284: "Environmental Ethics," addresses a theoretical approach to understanding environmental problems and conflicts in developing Latin American countries. Her three-credit course runs July 7 through July 31, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 6:45 p.m. to 9:55 p.m. and is offered as part of a UC/Brazil collaboration made possible by a four-year federal FIPSE grant (Fund for Improvement of Post-Secondary Education).

Ambassador Thomas Dodd, who has served as ambassador to Costa Rica and to the Republic of Uruguay has, most recently, been an adjunct professor at Georgetown's School of Foreign Service and the School of International Service of American University. Ambassador Dodd brings a wealth of practical experience as a diplomat and a broad historical vision to IL 295: "The Art and Conduct of Diplomacy: Case Studies in Inter-American Relations." The three-credit course runs July 7 to August 1, Monday through Friday, from 10:40 a.m. to 12:40 p.m.

"The summer is an excellent time to concentrate on one or two courses that can give students an edge for the fall or spring semesters and UC courses are open to students from other colleges and universities," said Edna F. Wilson, dean of University College. "Both of these courses offer global perspectives on a range of crucial choices Latin American governments will make in the future and, as a consequence of proximity, the decisions will certainly impact on the United States."
