Area high school students honored by Fairfield University's School of Engineering and Sikorsky Aircraft Corp.

Fairfield University School of Engineering and Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation recently honored high school juniors from throughout Fairfield and New Haven counties at the 2008 'Excellence in Mathematics and Science Awards.' E. Vagos Hadjimichal, Ph. D., dean of the School of Engineering, and Susan Hitchcock, director of community relations for Sikorsky Aircraft Corp., presented students from 31 schools with medals and certificates for their academic accomplishments in science and mathematics at a ceremony held on the Fairfield University campus at Alumni House.

Dr. Hadjimichael encouraged the students to study engineering, technology and science. "For the United States to continue to be a force to be reckoned with in the global economy, we need young people to pursue careers in science and engineering. It is vital that we stay competitive. The global economy is knowledge-based. Hence we need knowledgeable people in research and development to maintain our standard of living. You can help be the answer to national need."

Hitchcock noted, "I'm looking at the great faces to lead our industry one day... Some of you will make significant discoveries that will touch peoples' lives."

Schools the recipients are students at include Fairfield Ludlowe High School, Fairfield College Preparatory School, Fairfield Warde High School, Amity Regional Senior High School, Ansonia High School, Bassick High School, Bethel High School, Brien McMahon High School, Bullard Havens Vocational Technical High School, Bunnell High School, Central High School, Convent of the Sacred Heart, Danbury High School, Derby High School, Greenwich High School, Harding HS, Henry Abbott Voc. Tech., Hyde Leadership High School, Joel Barlow High School, Joseph A. Foran High School, Kolbe-Cathedral HS, Masuk High School, Newtown High School, Notre Dame High School, Platt Voc. Tech. School, Saint Joseph High School, Shelton High School, Stamford High School, Staples High School, Stratford High School, Trinity Catholic High School, Westhill High School, and Weston High School.
