Guantanamo Bay attorney to speak at Fairfield University | Press Releases

Image: Falkoff Dr. Marc Falkoff, the principal lawyer for 17 Yemeni men detained by the U.S. military at Guantánamo Bay, will speak at Fairfield University on Thursday, April 24 at 7 p.m. in the DiMenna-Nyselius Library, on "Guantánamo: Notes from Inside the Wire." Admission is free and the public is welcome.

One of the first U.S. citizens to visit the military detainment camp in Cuba, Dr. Falkoff has warned that Guantánamo is just the tip of the iceberg, with 14,000 prisoners illegally detained in U.S. prisons worldwide.

"Poems from Guantánamo: The Detainees Speak," published last year by University of Iowa Press and edited by Dr. Falkoff, gives voice to the men of Guantánamo. It was made possible by dedicated pro bono attorneys who submitted each line to pentagon scrutiny.

Dr. Falkoff, an assistant professor of law at Northern Illinois Univeristy, specializes in criminal law, federal courts, and Habeas Corpus. While on Fairfield's campus he will meet with students in the Peace and Justice capstone course as well as students in the honors course, Minds & Bodies.

Dr. Falkoff earned a Ph.D. in American Literature from Brandeis University and a J.D. from Columbia University.
