The popular Director's Choice Series of lectures presented each year by Dr. Diana Mille, director of the Thomas J. Walsh Art Gallery at Fairfield University, begins with a lecture relating to the world premiere exhibition currently on display, "The Creative Photograph in Archaeology," on Wednesday, Oct. 3. The public is invited to bring a brown-bag lunch to the 12:30-1:30 p.m. gallery talk. Admission to the lecture is $5.

Dr. Katherine Schwab, associate professor of art history in the Fairfield University Department of Visual and Performing Arts and one of the organizers of the current exhibition of historical and contemporary photographs of Greek antiquities, will deliver the first lecture in the 2007-08 Director's Choice Series. Dr. Schwab will discuss "Creative Intentions, Truth and Archaeology" as the concepts relate to the unique collection that is the exhibition.

The collection includes more than 70 stunningly dramatic black and white framed prints featuring Greek antiquities that have been produced from high resolution scans of the original negatives. The exhibition is divided into five units that span 150 years and visually portray the bold story of the delicate balance between documentation and creative vision in photographs with antiquities as the subject - from the first photographic attempts of the early travelers in the 19th century through the sophisticated work of the late 20th to early 21st century. The exhibition runs through Dec. 9.

Dr. Mille designed the Director's Choice Series of lectures as a vehicle by which students of all ages might spend a lunchtime hour in the pleasant and, often provocative, gallery surroundings and enrich their body of knowledge in a multitude of subtleties that accompany the study of contemporary art.
