"Calling Doctor Amelia Bedelia..." to the Quick Center for the Arts April 15 and 16 | Press Releases

The Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts at Fairfield University presents the Theatreworks/USA production of a new musical revue, "Calling Doctor Amelia Bedelia and Other Stories," on Sunday, April 15 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. and once again, as an ArtsBound Outreach event, on Monday, April 16 at 10 a.m. The 55-minute show is written for children in grades K-4.

"Calling Doctor Amelia Bedelia and Other Stories" is a fast-paced original show that features live performers who sing and dance and play a variety of characters based on those in the classic Amelia Bedelia series as well as other stories that are more recent. The musical was developed to inspire and entertain children everywhere by combining the magic of theater and the joy of literature.

Amelia, famous to children as the literal-minded maid prone to misinterpretations, finds herself fielding patient calls in the doctor's office while the doctor is delayed at the hospital. Not surprisingly, she infuriates one and all as she incorrectly interprets symptoms. But, as usual, Amelia smoothes over the rough spots and saves the day with delicious treats for everyone.

"Baby Rattlesnake" is a Native American tale of familial love and forgiveness, a tale that teaches what happens when you get something before you are ready - like a rattle on your baby tail.

"Anansi and the Talking Melon" centers on Anansi the Spider, a wise, funny, mischievous and loveable folk hero who pops up in traditional Ashanti tales from Ghana, West Africa. In this tale, Anansi is so hungry for melon, he eats his way into Elephant's melon, gets stuck, tricks naïve Elephant and the other animals they encounter on the way to see the King Monkey, where all is resolved - for a time.

"Exercise - a Sing-Along" gives the audience a chance to experience physical alternatives to reading, using a computer or watching TV. All are encouraged to march, shake, jump and feel their muscles pulsating in their bodies.

In "Ira Says Goodbye," buddies Ira and Reggie anticipate separation through a move for one of them. What happens when one of the boys gets angry and does a spiteful deed? After the fact, they both realize the importance of finding a way to repair their treasured friendship and it's up to them to find a successful solution.

Tickets for the Sunday performances are $12 adults, $10 children. Monday's ArtsBound Outreach performance is $7. The Greater Bridgeport Area Foundation supports the ArtsBound series.
