Director's Choice lecture at Walsh Art Gallery features current exhibit curator | Press Releases

The Thomas J. Walsh Art Gallery's Director, Diana Mille, Ph.D., presents the third of four Director's Choice lectures on Wednesday, Feb. 7 from 12:30-1:30 pm in the Gallery. Graciela Kartofel, curator of the current exhibit, "Multiple Visions: Traveling Art Boxes from Argentina, Mexico and Uruguay" will deliver the lecture.

According to Curator Kartofel, "the artistic terrain produces testimonies for the survival of diversity, which is a responsibility of our time." She maintains, "Anyone interested in understanding and appreciating our multicultural world, can find, through art, the human path to other ways of thinking." In her lecture, she will discuss this premise and various aspects of the exhibit including expanding on her criteria for developing the concept for "Multiple Visions."

Different cultures nourish the art coming in the "Traveling Art Boxes," and Curator Kartofel acknowledged the positive aspects of multiculturalism when making her choices of which art pieces to include in the exhibit. She admits that the work – as a whole – "projects an emotive and intellectual vitality that is provocative." Artists are, by nature, observant and, as part of the creative process, they absorb daily realities in idiosyncratic ways. She notes that this natural evolution, "effectively creates a wide array of expressions as the artists continuously develop new personal codes, signs, dreams and open charts of ideas. Such creative human machinery, which also incorporates some electronic tools, creates traces for the future."

It is Curator Kartofel's belief that "Multiple Visions" acts as a bridge between Argentina, Mexico and Uruguay and the people in the United States. She will discuss the elements that contribute to making this exhibit a "multicultural exhibition" and not merely a group show. And she will examine the deep involvement of each of these artists in their environments and cultures, the variety of ways in which some developed their personal techniques - many of which are unique in the world and, finally, she will explore why, "the box!"

"Multiple Visions - Traveling Art Boxes from Argentina, Mexico and Uruguay" will continue until March 11, 2007. Walsh Art Gallery hours are: Tuesday-Saturday, 11 a.m.–5 p.m., Sunday, Noon–4 p.m., Monday, Closed. Admission to the exhibit is free.

The last Director's Choice lecture will be on Wednesday, April 18 from 12:30-1:30 p.m.
