Fairfield University graduate Donald Preziosi, Ph.D., one of the leading art historians in the world today, returns to his alma mater to deliver an intriguing lecture on art on Tuesday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. in the Dolan School of Business Dining Room. He is a professor of art history at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and Oxford University.
Entitled, "Plato's Dilemma: Art, Religion & Artifice," the lecture is free and open to the public. It is presented by Art History, Visual and Performing Arts, the Office of the Academic Vice President, the Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, and the Office of Alumni Relations. Dr. Preziosi will also be honored that evening as a Distinguished Alumnus. He graduated in 1962 with a bachelor degree in English and the Classics.
Philip Eliasoph, Ph.D., professor of art history, said it will be a proud day for Fairfield when Dr. Preziosi returns to campus. "The cycle of life and learning comes full circle in the distinguished career of Professor Preziosi. The seed that was planted in our classrooms here 44 years ago has blossomed and reach full fruition. Initiated in Fairfield's rigorous intellectual training and Jesuit pedagogy, this remarkable mind advanced to Harvard, UCLA and Oxford to become one of the leading art historians of our time. We are honored to have this alumnus join us for this triumphant return."
After graduating from Fairfield, Dr. Preziosi attended Harvard University, where he earned a master's degree in Linguistics and a Ph.D. in art history. He has taught at Yale University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Cornell University, among other prestigious institutions. At UCLA, he developed the art history critical theory program and the UCLA museum studies program. He is the author of numerous books, including "Rethinking Art History: Meditations on a Coy Science," "Brain of the Earth's Body: Museums & the Fabrication of Modernity," and "Seeing Through Art History."
