Fashion Show and Fair at Fairfield University to highlight socially just products

Fairfield University students will hold a fair and fashion show on Monday, April 3, to raise awareness of businesses that support and promote environmental sustainability and fair trade standards. Junior Kevin Donohue from Scranton, Penn., is chairing the student effort, which is being sponsored by Campus Ministry, the Department of Residential Life, and the Department of Economics.

The event, which will also feature student bands performing songs with socially just themes, takes place from 7 to 9 p.m. in the John A. Barone Campus Center Oak Room and is free and open to the public. Featured in the fashion show will be "No Sweat™" apparel, manufactured by Bienestar International and produced by independent trade union members in the United States, Canada, and the developing world. Among local businesses taking part in the program are Soybean in Black Rock and Trader Joe's on Black Rock Turnpike in Fairfield.

No Sweat™ goods are marketed directly to consumers, relying primarily on word of mouth support and internet sales (www.nosweatshop.com) for distribution. By eliminating the cost of advertising, the company says it can provide a competitive product for consumers and a living wage to its workers.

Questions about the program may be directed to Melissa Quan, assistant chaplain, at (203) 254-4000, ext. 2668.
