"The Eucharist in a Violent World" presented by Fairfield University's Program in Catholic Studies

Rev. John A. Baldovin, S.J., Ph.D., director of the Master of Divinity Program and professor of historical and liturgical theology at the Weston Jesuit School of Theology in Cambridge, Mass., will speak at Fairfield University on Wednesday, Oct. 12 at 8 p.m. on "The Eucharist in a Violent World." The talk, sponsored by Fairfield's Program in Catholic Studies, will be presented in the Charles F. Dolan School of Business Dining Room and is free and open to the public.

Father Baldovin's academic interests include sacramental theology and the history and theology of the Eucharist, while his research has focused on Eucharistic theology. His most recent book is "Bread of Life, Cup of Salvation," (Rowman and Littlefield, 2003) and among his most recent articles is "Relics, Martyrs and the Eucharist," Liturgical Ministry 12 (2003).

Previously, Fr. Baldovin was with the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley, beginning in 1984 as assistant professor of historical and liturgical theology. During his tenure there he was interim dean for one year, director of liturgy, and acting president from 1997-1998. He was a full professor when he left in 1999 to accept his appointment at Weston.

Fr. Baldovin has also taught at Le Moyne College and Fordham University and is a member of the North American Academy of Liturgy and of Societas Liturgica and sits on the advisory board of the International Commission on English in the Liturgy (ICEL). He is a member of the Board of Trustees at Fairfield University.

A 1969 graduate of the College of the Holy Cross, he entered the Society of Jesus in 1969 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1975. He holds a Master of Divinity degree with distinction from the Weston School of Theology; and a Master of Arts, a Master of Philosophy and a Ph.D. in theology, all from Yale University.
