Fairfield University professor's novel named a finalist for Connecticut Book Award

"The Garden of Martyrs," a gripping novel by Fairfield University Professor Michael C. White, has been named a finalist for the Connecticut Book Award in fiction.

The Connecticut Center for the Book at Hartford Public Library will present the fourth annual Connecticut Book Awards in a ceremony at Hartford City Hall on Sunday, Dec. 4.

"The Garden of Martyrs" is a fictionalized account of the little-known 1805 Massachusetts case of Dominic Daley and James Halligan, two Irish Catholics held on murder charges after a young Protestant farmer was found dead along the Boston Post Road stretch where the men were walking. Published by St. Martin's Press in May 2004, the book is White's fourth novel, following the well-received "A Dream of Wolves," (HarperCollins, 2001), "The Blind Side of the Heart," (HarperCollins, 1999), and "A Brother's Blood," which was named a New York Times Notable Book of 1996.

White, who holds a doctorate from the University of Denver, teaches literature of the Irish Famine, fiction writing and publishing at Fairfield.
