Guest lecturer considers American iconography at the Thomas J. Walsh Art Gallery at Fairfield University

Jeffrey Wechsler, chief curator of the Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University, will present "What Do I Mean By That: Adventures in Modern Iconography" on Wednesday, Dec. 7, at 12:30 p.m. at Fairfield University's Thomas J. Walsh Art Gallery. The one-hour talk, part of the 2005 Director's Choice lecture series, "History of Art in the Western World," is open to the public.

The gallery is located in the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts.

During his slide lecture, Wechsler will consider 20th century American painting in terms of the symbols and images used in artists' work, especially pieces by surrealists, magic surrealists and abstract painters.

Those attending the lecture can also view the gallery's current exhibit, "Indian Paintings of the New Millennium: Collection of Sunanda and Umesh Gaur," a rare peek at some of the most intriguing artwork being produced in India. On display through Sunday, Dec. 11, the exhibit includes a selection of modern and contemporary paintings from post-Independence India.

Admission to the Director's Choice lecture is $5. Participants may bring a brown bag lunch. For more information, call (203) 254-4000, ext. 2969.
