Maureen Magarity named assistant women's basketball coach

Magarity comes to Fairfield after coaching, playing at Marist College

Fairfield University Director of Athletics Eugene P. Doris announced the hiring of Maureen Magarity as an assistant women's basketball coach. Magarity will join Head Coach Dianne Nolan on her staff, after serving as an assistant coach at Marist College, last season.

Magarity comes to Fairfield, after helping the Red Foxes to a program-best 22-7 overall record, and a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Regular Season Championship. She will be involved with all aspects for the Fairfield women's program, including scouting, player development and community relations.

"I'm very happy to have someone of her knowledge and abilities," Nolan said. "We knew her when we were recruiting her; we played against her when she was a player at Boston College, and at Marist, and when she was a coach last year. She's a quality person, and we're happy to have someone of her character join us at Fairfield University."

A native of Wappingers Falls, N.Y., Magarity joined the coaching staff at her alma mater last season, and was involved in all facets of the program. She helped organize the first women's basketball Alumni Game in more than 15 years, and was an assistant director of the Marist Girls Basketball Camp.

"She comes to our program with a great deal of experience," Nolan added. "After being at Marist, and in addition to being a coach's daughter, she fits what we were looking for. We look forward to her energy and the contributions she will make to our team."

Her father is Dave Magarity, the former men's basketball coach at Marist College, and current director of men's basketball operations with the MAAC.

Before entering the coaching profession, she helped the Red Foxes to their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 2004. As a senior, she averaged 13.4 points per game and 3.4 rebounds a contest. She garnered two second-team All-MAAC selections, and was a 2004 MAAC All-Tournament Team choice.

She captained the Red Foxes in her junior and senior seasons, and garnered two MAAC Scholar Athlete Awards (2002, 2004). As a senior, she was received the James Pizzani Award, which is awarded annually by the Marist Athletic Department.

Before transferring to Marist, she played at Boston College, where she was a teammate of former Fairfield University women's basketball player Janelle McManus. As a member of the Boston College women's basketball team, the Eagles reached the semifinals of the preseason WNIT, and advanced to the second-round of the NCAA Tournament as a number-five seed.

She earned her bachelor's degree from Marist in 2003, in Communications and Public Relations. Next week she will earn her master's degree in Public Administration, from Marist.
