Fairfield University Media Center wins four awards in international competitions

Fairfield University's Media Center has won four honors in two recent international competitions, the Videographer Awards and the Communicator Awards.

Two Media Center videos won Awards of Excellence, the top prize level, at the 2005 Videographer Awards. "The Dr. Dhil Show," a parody of TV's "Dr. Phil," was produced for the Dean of Freshmen to address the issue of plagiarism. Written and directed by Jared Mezzocchi, a student intern assigned to the Media Center, the video was shown at the freshman Fall Welcome in September. Mezzocchi is a sophomore majoring in New Media: Film, Television, and Radio.

"TFL - Total Fairfield Live," a video designed, written and directed by Media Center staffers Casey Timmeny and John Ur, also won an award of excellence at the 2005 event. Made for the Department of New Student Programs, this video, a send-up of MTV's popular "TRL - Total Request Live," was shown during freshman orientation. The video explained Fairfield's vibrant campus life through music videos about University departments and ads for student groups and programs.

"Mission Fulfilled," a video celebrating the University's recent successful capital campaign, won an award of distinction at the Videographer Awards. Shown to major contributors and friends at the President's Dinner in New York City in September, it was produced by the Media Center as a sequel to "Mission Possible," a video that helped launch the campaign. The latest video offered a chance to announce the $137.9 million raised in the campaign, allowed former University President, Rev. Aloysius P. Kelley, S.J., to thank everyone for their efforts and introduced new University President Rev. Jeffrey P. von Arx, S.J.

The Videographer Awards is an international awards competition that helps set the standards for the video production industry. The Award of Excellence is presented to those videos the judges feel were written, produced, shot and edited in an exceptional manner. Only 14 percent of the 2,293 entries received this honor. The Award of Distinction is awarded to projects that clearly exceed industry standards for video production. About 17 percent of entries won this award.

The Media Center also won an Award of Distinction at the Communicator Awards 2005 Print Competition. Media Center staffer Karen Connolly designed and produced "Living the Possibilities," a mid-grant report focused on Ignatian College, a residential experience involving about 200 Fairfield sophomores interested in studying how they might use their gifts and passions to make a difference in the world. The report was produced for Lilly Endowment Inc., which provided a five-year grant for Ignatian College.

The international Communicator Awards recognize outstanding work in the communications field. The Award of Distinction is awarded to projects that exceed industry standards. About 19 percent of the 5,078 entries won this award.
