Fairfield offers summer programs for all ages

Fairfield University is your one-stop shop for a variety of educational and fun-filled summer programs. Besides offering credit and non-credit summer courses, Fairfield University also hosts a plethora of programs designed for all ages, from children to adults. These programs range from basketball camps to Shakespearean workshops and everyone is sure to find something that will both please and enrich them during their summer months.

University College Programs

Jazz Workshop
Offers middle school, high school and college age student instrumentalists an intense five-day jazz experience with director Brian Torff, music program director at Fairfield University. The students of this workshop will both perform in jazz ensembles and attend classes/workshops in jazz improvisation and theory. Upon the end of the workshop, the students will perform in a concert at the Gonzaga Hall auditorium. In order to participate in this program, the participants must have at least two years experience with their musical instrument and have a basic music-reading ability.

Summer Institute for the Gifted-Day Program
This program, provided by the Summer Institute for the Gifted (SIG), has been running strong for more than 21 years, three at Fairfield University, providing gifted students an exciting and challenging summer experience based on students' abilities and interests. The courses are taught at levels appropriate for gifted students in grades one through six, covering mathematics and sciences, humanities, and multi-disciplinary courses. Each student who attends these workshops has the opportunity to choose three courses and has a recreational period. Classes meet five times a week for 90 minutes each. The site coordinator is Rich Taubald.

Institute for Reading Development
This program, provided by the Institute of Reading Development, began in 1971 and has increased to teach more than 85,000 students each year at its various locations. Participants in this program will learn to read substantially faster while improving their concentration, comprehension and recall. This program is effective for reading business, academic and technical materials, as well as recreational and non-fiction. As a result of improved reading speed and comprehension, the average graduate saves 5-10 hours a week, according to the Institute. Participants receive a Lifetime Repeat Privilege, which means you may return for more instruction in the future for no additional charge. Programs are available for pre-schoolers through adults.

Institution for Retired Professionals
The Institute for Retired Professionals is open to all retired and semi-retired people over 55 and the only requirement for joining is an intellectual curiosity. The Summer Institute is a weeklong series of three daily lectures from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. A festive dinner on Thursday evening, June 9, is also included. Members may bring guests to the dinner for an additional charge of $28. Members are also encouraged to bring a brown bag lunch each day; coffee, tea and dessert will be served, free of charge, during each luncheon break. Members of The Institute may audit one undergraduate course during the fall and spring semesters as well as attend monthly symposia by distinguished Fairfield University faculty members.

Sports Programs

The Hoop School
This basketball camp for females only is run by Fairfield University's Head Women's Basketball Coach Dianne Nolan. The one-week day camp is designed to teach the total game of basketball. Drill work, lectures and competition are all geared to age and ability grouping and each camper will get the opportunity to participate in two games per day. Head coaches will give lectures and a fundamental Drill Station Program is guaranteed to make each camper a more valuable player. Many of the former campers are top players on their high school and college teams.

The Tim O'Toole Basketball Academy
The Tim O'Toole Basketball Camp is for boys age 7 to 14 to help enhance them both physically and mentally. Fairfield University Men's Basketball Coach Tim O'Toole runs the camp and his goals for the program are twofold: to consistently encourage and strengthen one's self esteem, and to teach the fundamentals of basketball, from both an individual perspective and within the team framework. The camp activities include daily lectures from pro and former college stars as well as college coaches, and every camper is awarded a free camp t-shirt and ball.

Baseball
The NIKE Baseball Camp is for boys age 8 to 18, and will make its first appearance at Fairfield University this summer. The camp will feature instruction from college coaches, including Fairfield University pitching coach Patrick Hall, who has been involved in youth baseball, as a coach, and instructor for several college, youth, and summer camps throughout the State of Connecticut. The camp will be conducted at the home of Fairfield University baseball, Alumni Diamond. The camp activities include daily lectures on various fundamental aspects of the game of baseball, individual drill work and instruction, and education on preparing for college baseball, sports nutrition, and personal goal setting. Campers will receive a post-camp improvement plan, a NIKE Baseball Camp binder and t-shirt, as well as other prizes throughout the week.

Field Hockey
The NIKE Field Hockey Camp makes its return to Fairfield University this summer. Three different sessions, are offered for girls 10 to 18, at all different skill levels. The campers are treated like collegiate student-athletes, practicing techniques and tactics that have been used by Fairfield University's field hockey program. Session I is an Elite Camp, geared for serious high potential players. Session II is a Mini Camp designed for the developing Jr. High/Middle School player. Beginners are also welcome. Session III is a Team and Individual Camp focusing on skill development position play, small games and scrimmages. Also, special goalkeeping instruction is available during all sessions. The camp is under the direction of Fairfield University Head Coach Jackie Kane Leonard, who has guided her teams to the conference championships and a berth into the 2001 NCAA Tournament.

Men's Soccer
Planet Soccer returns to Fairfield University for the eighth year. Planet Soccer is committed to providing each player with a memorable camp experience. The goal is to create an exciting environment in which campers are provided with the best chance to develop as players. The camp is for both boys and girls age 6 to 17, and campers will learn through various technique sessions, games, and competitions.

Softball
NIKE Softball Camp returns to Fairfield University this summer. The camp, under the direction of Fairfield University Head Coach Julie Brzezinski and her staff of current and former collegiate coaches and players, provides girls age 10 to 18 superior instruction with daily emphasis on fundamental development and team play. Campers will take part in daily lectures, drill and station work, and games and will receive a NIKE Camp T-Shirt and workbook, along with other prizes throughout the week.

Quick Center Programs

Missoula Children's Theatre
Celebrating its 16th season in 2005, this renowned young peoples theater program offers six sessions and four different plays to choose from. A total of 60 community young people, grades 1-12, will be registered in each weekly section according to cast requirements. Children must be six years old by July 1 each year to enter this program. The week culminates with a performance featuring every child involved in this program. During the week participants rehearse their parts, and for those not on call for rehearsal, participate in an exciting schedule of activities and workshops including: acting workshops, theater improvisation, theater and vocal improvement exercises, movement workshops, and arts and crafts projects.

The Quick Center for the Arts Summer Festival Chorus
Summer Festival Chorus provides the highest standards of choral training and members learn a wide variety of musical styles. The 2005 season's delightful repertoire embraces a celebration of romance in compositions by John Lennon, Daniel Pinkham, Johannes Brahms, and Broadway greats Leonard Bernstein and Andrew Lloyd Webber. The musicdirector of the chorus is Carol Ann Maxwell, D.S.M, director of choral and liturgical music at Fairfield University, and has been since the program's creation 12 years ago.

National Computer Camps
Michael Zabinski, Ph. D., Professor of Physics and Engineering at Fairfield University, founded National Computer Camps, Inc. (NCC) in 1977. Now in its 28th year, NCC is America's original computer camp. The focus of NCC is video game design, computer programming, digital video production, web page design, A+ and Network+ certification, and software applications including animation, Flash and graphics. An optional sports program is also available. Each week NCC offers all levels of programming in Basic, C++, Java, assembler, HTML, XML, and JavaScript. The coed campers, ages 8-18, may attend one-or multi-week sessions with a continuous curriculum that is age appropriate and suitable for beginners to the super advanced. The camps are held at Fairfield University in June, July and August are ideal for experienced and first time campers. Residential and day programs are available. Shakespeare Ventures at Fairfield University
Summer Acting Workshop:
This is a four-week intensive workshop for students ages 10 to 19. With an emphasis on performance and contemporary relevance of Shakespeare's text, the students have in previous years explored "Romeo and Juliet" and "Twelfth Night" through physical and vocal exercises, improvisation, scene study, mask work and stage combat. Their work culminates in an Informance in which the students will perform their favorite acting exercises, combat sequences and selected scenes.
Currently in its third year, Shakespeare Ventures will also mount a full-scale professional production of "Macbeth" on the University's campus, in addition to the four-week workshop for students. Through both productions and educational programming, accessibility to the text is of paramount importance. In all endeavors, Shakespeare Ventures engages with a sense of exploration, thoroughly embracing the word "play" in all its connotations.
Schedule: 2005 Summer Acting Workshop runs Monday through Friday July 5-29, 2005 with the final Informance on Saturday, July 30, 2005 at 10 a.m.
"Macbeth" will be performed in the PepsiCo Theatre July 28-30, 2005 at 8 p.m., July 31, 2005 at 2 p.m., August 4-6, 2005 at 8 p.m., August 7, 2005 at 2 p.m., and August 11-13, 2005 at 8 p.m.

CT Writing Project
The goal of The Connecticut Writing Project at Fairfield University is to improve student writing by strengthening the teaching and learning of writing, providing professional development programs for classroom teachers and expanding professional roles of teachers.
CWP-Fairfield, an affiliate of the National Writing Project, has worked with more than 350 teachers, kindergarten through college, to improve student literacy.
In the summer of 2005, CWP-Fairfield will offer a rich assortment of programs for teachers, including Institutes on teaching writing, teaching literature and using technology in literacy classrooms. Teachers may also attend a one-week Institute where the focus is on generating their own pieces to share and/or publish. Teachers in the Institutes are eligible for C.E.U.'s or graduate credit from Fairfield University.
CWP-Fairfield also provides two-to three-week Young Writers Institutes for youngsters from sixth to twelfth grades who come from many Fairfield County school districts to write together, enjoy workshops on various genres, and work with published writers and illustrators to improve the craft of writing. CWP-Fairfield was designated a Center for Excellence by the Connecticut State Legislature in 1985 and shares with other Writing Project sites the Carnegie Corporation of New York's evaluation as the "best large-scale effort to improve composition instruction now in operation in this country."
