Children's favorite "Junie B. Jones" comes to the Quick Center

Image: Junie B. Jones "Junie B. Jones," a new musical based on four tales about the loveable grammar school heroine, comes to Fairfield University's Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts on Sunday, May 1, at 1 and 3 p.m. An additional performance, part of the Quick Center's ArtsBound Schoolday Series, will take place on Monday, May 2, at 10 a.m.

Suitable for children in grades K through 4, many of whom have probably read Barbara Park's breezy "Junie B. Jones" books, the musical includes adaptations of "Junie B. Jones is a Graduation Girl," "Junie B. Jones, First Grader (At Last!)," "Junie B. Jones, Boss of Lunch," and "Junie B. Jones, Toothless Wonder." In the lively performance, Junie meets new friends, helps the cafeteria lady, loses a tooth and narrowly escapes disaster at every turn. All the while, she keeps the audience abreast of her every thought in her top-secret personal beeswax journal.

Conceived by TheatreWorks USA, the program was written by Marcy Heisler and Zina Goldrich, a theater writing pair who won the 2002 ASCAP Richard Rodgers New Horizons Theatre Award. Recently voted "Best Knocking on Broadway's Door Songwriting Team" in the Village Voice's Best of NYC, the pair has also provided songs for PBS, Disney Interactive and the CBS sitcom "Murphy Brown," and has appeared at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center Millenium Stage and the Ford Center of the Performing Arts.

Founded in 1961, TheatreWorks USA is one of the nation's foremost professional theatres for family audiences. The company aims to create imaginative, sophisticated shows that are also educational and thought provoking. TheatreWorks has performed for about 72 million people in 49 states, including its homebase in New York City.

Tickets for the Sunday performances are $12 for adults, $10 for children. The Monday performance is scheduled to include school groups and K-4 students. Study guides are available on the Quick Center's website. Tickets for that performance are $7. For tickets, call the Quick Center box office at (203) 254-4010 or toll free at 1-877-ARTS-396.
