University College at Fairfield University offers "Introduction to Field Ornithology"

Image: owl Milan Bull, senior director of Conservation and Science for the Connecticut Audubon Society of Fairfield, will take students through the fundamentals of ornithology before taking them into the field to get some hands-on training. The classes will run on three Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

On Sept. 23, class will meet at Fairfield University, where students will learn the basic topics and terms used by the field ornithologist as well as the proper tools needed to be a successful bird watcher. Through slides, the identification techniques and fall migratory patterns of birds in the Northeast will be discussed.

On Sept. 30, class will convene at the Connecticut Audubon Society on Burr Street in Fairfield. Students will learn about the contribution of amateur ornithologists to the field of ornithology and watch a live demonstration of the techniques of bird banding, the process of marking birds in order to track them.

On Oct. 7, students are off to the Connecticut Shoreline, where participants will identify birds and begin their field diaries.

"Birding is one of the fastest growing pastimes in America," Bull said. "Amateur birders have added more to our knowledge of ornithology than any other science."

The cost of the course is $99. To register by phone, call (203) 254-4288. For more information call (203) 254-4307 or visit University College at www.fairfield.edu.
