Fairfield University's School of Engineering to host symposium | Press Releases

As part of its Industrial Symposia series, the School of Engineering at Fairfield University will host a workshop about new developments in the field of electrical and mechanical systems. The symposium will take place Friday, September 26, at 6 p.m. in room 102 of McAuliffe Hall.

The lectures and open discussions that will take place are geared toward engineers working in industry as well as academic colleagues, and are free and open to the public.

The topics to be addressed at the symposium are "The Use of Diamond Films in Electronics" and "An Investment Justification Process for New Products." Presenters will be Jerry Sergent, Ph.D., chair, Electrical Engineering, and Paul Bauer, Ph.D., adjunct professor, Management of Technology.

"What we hope to foster, I think, is better relationships and more interaction between academia and industry," said Dr. Sergent. "We think that we have a lot to offer each other and it's really an opportunity to exchange ideas."

In "The Use of Diamond Films in Electronics," Dr. Sergent, will discuss the role diamonds play in removing heat from the components of electrical equipment and consequently, improving the reliability of the product.

"People think of diamonds in terms of diamond rings and jewelry, but they actually have applications in electronics as well," Dr. Sergent said.

In "An Investment Justification Process for New Products," Dr. Bauer will address the way that corporations evaluate innovative proposals. The method Dr. Bauer will introduce to assess research and development projects, he said, will show "corporations that projects that they think are high risk actually create shareholder value for them."
