Open Visions Forum

Monday, Sept. 30 at 7:30 p.m.
Pakistan's former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, the first woman to head an Islamic state, opens the sixth season of Fairfield University's Open VISIONS Forum. Sworn in as head of the opposition Pakistan People's Party in 1988, Bhutto dedicated herself to healing divisions in Pakistani society and focused her attention on the health, social welfare and education of the underprivileged. In the ensuing decade of political struggle, she spent nearly six years in prison or under detention for her dedication to the party. Bhutto will deliver the annual Jacoby-Lunin Humanitarian Lecture, which is presented in affiliation with the university's Carl and Dorothy Bennett Center for Judaic Studies. The lecture takes place in the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts.

Open VISIONS Forum is a program of the School of Continuing Education. Ticket prices are $18 for each lecture, with discounts available for seniors and students. Art

September 17 - October 9
Fairfield University's Lukacs Gallery presents the works of sisters Cora and Suscha Korte, artists who bring significance to everyday objects in very different ways. Cora creates eye-catching, cube-shaped installations decorated with images and text. Her sister, on the other hand, presents a line of three plates, of the same size but with varying patterns. An opening reception takes place Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 5 p.m., followed by a lecture from 5:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. The Lukacs Gallery is located in Loyola Hall, Room 17, and is open weekday afternoons and several evenings a week. Admission is free. For more information and specific gallery hours, call (203) 254-4000, ext. 2476.

September 19 - December 8
Fairfield University's Thomas J. Walsh Art Gallery presents "Sal Sirugo - From the Intimate to the Infinite." An opening reception and lecture by exhibit curator James Wechsler will be held Thursday, Sept. 19 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The exhibition spans Sirugo's five decades of work and includes examples of his variations on the abstract expressionist sensibility, such as the semi-abstract circular forms he calls "eyes." Sirugo works in ink, graphite, washes and acrylic paints and chooses unusually small formats, just a few inches in height and width. The gallery is located in the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts. Viewing hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. For more information, call (203) 254-4000, ext. 2969.
