Whether it is a tableau of women seated in a murky nightclub or the portrait of a garment worker taking her coffee break, New York City-based artist Joseph Peller catches individuals in the unnoticed rituals of modern urban life. "The Essential Moment: A Survey of the Paintings, Works on Paper and Sculpture of Joseph Peller" will be on display at the Thomas J. Walsh Gallery at Fairfield University's Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts through August 4. Viewing hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. Admission is free. Summer Jazz Workshop

Monday, July 8 through Friday, July 12

Fairfield University's School of Continuing Education offers an intensive, five day Summer Jazz Workshop for instrumentalists in middle school, high school and college. Participants must have at least two years' experience in their instruments and have basic music-reading ability. Students will perform in jazz ensembles and attend classes from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in jazz improvisation, theory, rhythm and world music, history of jazz and jazz arranging and composition. The workshop is conducted by Brian Torff, the university's music program director. Tuition is $300. For more information, call (888) 254-1566.

Children's Summer Theatre Camp

Sixty young people in grades 1-12 are enrolled each week in the Quick Center for the Arts' Children's Summer Theatre Camp. The children rehearse and perform in productions staged by the Montana-based Missoula Children's Theatre. They also participate in professionally led workshops in theater movement, theater improvisation, arts and crafts and more. This popular summer camp is now in its 13th season. The students will perform four plays:

Hansel & Gretel July 5 & 26 at 7:30 p.m.
Red Riding Hood Aug. 2 & 16 at 7:30 p.m.
Jack & The Beanstalk Aug. 9 at 7:30 p.m.
The Pied Piper Aug. 23 at 7:30 p.m.
